It is okay sometimes with DIY electrical repairs from the internet or from the books. But these are for very elementary fittings like changing bulbs or fixing doorbells. Half knowledge is dangerous. It is always advisable to have a professional electrician handy in your phone’s address book.

Hire a professionally qualified and experienced electrician and keep a rapport with him. This will ensure he attends your call promptly. And in due course he will know your electrical wiring and fitting, which is important in emergencies to quickly locate the problem. 

Benjamin Pure says check the validity of the electrician’s license, there is no compromise on that. Else you may lose out on the insurance as well in case of a disaster.

Safe than sorry

Searching a good and more importantly an experienced electrician makes sense. All electrical problems are, by default, urgent in nature. He should attend your problems immediately.  Imagine spending the night in the dark without the room heater or air conditioning. There may be a small baby in the house. Check your electrical wires and fittings regularly and carry out preventive repairs. This is essential if your house is old.
